The History & Formation of Jökulsárlón

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon is one of Iceland’s most breathtaking natural wonders, located on the edge of Vatnajökull National Park, home to the largest glacier in Europe. This glacial lagoon was formed in the 1930s as a result of climate change and glacier retreat. Over the decades, the melting of Breiðamerkurjökull, an outlet glacier of Vatnajökull, has expanded the lagoon, making it Iceland’s deepest lake, reaching depths of 248 meters (814 feet).

The lagoon continues to grow as the glacier calves icebergs into the water, creating a constantly changing landscape of floating ice formations. The icebergs range in color from pure white to striking deep blue, with streaks of black volcanic ash from ancient eruptions, offering a glimpse into Iceland’s geological history.
